Pie

It's surprising how much pie moves while you're trying to capture its likeness.

Zenobia

Book cover for:

Daughter of Sand and Stone
by Libbie Hawker libbiehawker.com/

Zenobia was a 3rd-century Queen of the Palmyrene Empire in Syria, who led a famous revolt against the Roman Empire. She expanded the empire, conquering Egypt and expelling the Roman prefect, Tenagino Probus, who was beheaded after he led an attempt to recapture the territory. She ruled over Egypt until 274, when she was defeated and taken as a hostage to Rome by Emperor Aurelian. It is said that she was paraded through the streets of Rome, bound by chains of gold.

Old Brigand

This is an indirect study of this awesome portrait by Ilya Repin: http://bit.ly/1woIG67

I think master "copies" are a great way to learn, but it's easy to fall asleep while copying stroke per stroke.  So here I'm trying to mix it up a bit.

Thora

The first of a series of personal characters.

Just as an exercise, here were some my goals with this character design:
◘To create a costume that appeared both functional and somewhat memorable. It's really easy to over-design fantasy costumes, to the point where they're no longer practical. I aim for something an actor could wear in a realistic setting.
◘Use soft lighting. Slightly cool primary in the foreground, with a warm secondary kick light.
◘Stay loose with the brushwork wherever possible.

Manatee

The idea for this came about during a very busy week, but I couldn't wait to get it out. I'm fairly happy with the figure, though the environment may be a little lacking by comparison.  I wanted the foliage to seem out of focus, but it may simply appear rough and unfinished. If I get some more time, I might noodle on some more.

Doodle Dump

Here are some odds and ends.  Unfinished works and rough sketches.
These are by no means my best work, but maybe worth keeping record of.

30 min Spitpaint: "Tropical Island Hideout"

30 min Spitpaint: "Shield Maiden"

Some creepy guy, probably up to no good.

Two Italian interior concepts for a canceled project.

A birthday sketch

Lastly, a figure drawing from live model.

Sky Vine Transport

30 min speedy for the topic: "creature with arms longer than it's legs".

I think the composition is pretty successful, but if I had more time to work on it, I would try to add a greater sense of weight and forward momentum to the creature's pose. I can imagine these guys hastily running across a busy network of vines.

Red 3 - Character Concept

I had the recent opportunity to join Iain McCaig's workshop at Spectrum Fantastic Art Live 3, the art convention in Kansas City.

In the workshop on visual storytelling, McCaig demonstrated his process with a re-telling of Little Red Riding Hood.

In a post-apocalyptic sci-fi setting, Red is a brain-washed clone who's arm was harvested by the Originals. Perhaps for cruelty or entertainment, the Originals replace the clone body parts with all manner of prosthetic limbs.

In the above concept Red 3 has a cumbersome, but effective, weapon.

Below, is a completely different interpretation of the same character. Only this time, the gun arm is a crippling burden.
I think it's interesting to think about how changing one factor can effect all other aspects of a character.

Many thanks to my friend Mark Foster for great ideas on the second interpretation.

Here are some good notes of Iain McCaig's storytelling workshop:

Shovock

Shovock consumes the lives of others in order sustain his own, for a price...
The compounding afflictions and diseases from his victims are quite the burden.

CasinoRPG Launches!

I've learned so much working on this project over the past year. Isometric art presents a whole range of technical challenges, but by repeating just a few tiles a whole world can be created. The game is officially launched today! http://casinorpg.com/
